memory serves

I love the drawing, I’m glad to see that you are still doing it. . . the figure in this image might be dead, but your words aren’t.

hi again,
here are some more thoughts on your “memory” pic.
As with your other work, this image explores the idea of repetition. The figure appears to be seated in a racing car, but, instead of a helmet, it is wearing a halo. Ironically, the halo hasn’t provided sufficient protection, because the figure is dead. Racetracks are often circular – suggesting repetition. The car is facing towards the left, which symbolically represents the past. (memory is also a form of repetition) What is significant here is that car racing is not only exhilarating but dangerous (“Terminal Bliss”) As usual, the text is ambiguous: On the one hand, you seem to be speaking to the object of your desire (a past or future lover – or both?). You could also be addressing the desire itself or the compulsion that drives you to repeat potentially self-destructive behaviors – “intact vices” – it is unclear however, whose grip is “absent”; the vice’s grip on you or your grip on the vice. In the case of the latter, the cycle will inevitably repeat itself - it isn’t a question of “if” but “when”.
